Genre: Chamber music

Finland 100 years

A chamber music concert celebrating Finland's 100 years of independence. Music by Saariaho, Netzel, Fordell and Kuula.

Finland celebrates 100 years as an independent nation and here, we will celebrate with music. Classical music is a natural part of Finland’s history. Jean Sibelius is a prominent figure in Finland’s musical scene, but this concert demonstrates that there is so much more.

Laura Netzel (1839–1927, Swedish composer born in Finland) studied under Widor in Paris and composed music in the late-Romantic style with French influences. She was also widely recognised by the French music press in her time. Toivo Kuula (1883–1918) studied with both Sibelius and Järnefelt and in addition to a fine symphony, he wrote several orchestral suites and chamber music. Here, we will hear the melodically charming and warmly lyrical piano trio. We will also hear songs by the incredibly diverse and prolific Erik Fordell (1917–81).
