Honeck Conducts Bruckner

Austrian Manfred Honeck interprets the music of the Austrians Haydn and Bruckner.

It is with great pleasure that we welcome conductor Manfred Honeck back to Konserthuset. He is chief conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, and also conducts many more of the world’s most prestigious orchestras. He is a familiar name to many in Sweden after serving as chief conductor of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra for years.

A few years ago, he led the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra in Mahler’s Symphony No. 1. Now he returns with another major Romantic work: Bruckner’s Symphony No. 9, a magnificent and majestic piece by one of the most prominent figures of Romanticism. Bruckner was still working on the symphony’s final movement on the day of his death, and the symphony was left incomplete.

The concert will begin with one of Haydn’s famous so-called London symphonies. When he received a request for twelve symphonies from Johann Peter Salomon, who was of German descent and had his own orchestra in London, he couldn’t say no. And for that we must be thankful. In the most positive regard, this is classical music.
