Voices of Angels

Voices of the instruments – a unique concert experience with an innovative ensemble.

In Voices of Angels, composers use of voices and singing in instrumental music is examined; music where the human voice is imitated by the instruments, or used as a source of inspiration. The programme is centered around Australian composer Brett Dean's Piano Quintet Voice of Angels. In addition to this, music by for instance Franz Schubert, Sergei Rachmaninov, Paul Hindemith and Frank Martin. Stockholm Syndrom Ensemble's guests are viola virtuoso Lawrence Power and violinist Andrej Power, concert master of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra.

The Stockholm Syndrome Ensemble was born in 2012 from an ambition to create concert experiences that are free from the conventions of chamber music. The repertoire is broad and filled with contrasts: the ensemble tackles the music of Purcell and Messiaen, as well as Bob Dylan and Radiohead.

The Stockholm Syndrome Ensemble often bases its concerts on, for example, a course of events, a state of mind or a human tragedy: the border between insanity and genius; Paris and New York as musical points of intersection; or the impact of World War I on composers and artists.

The members of the Stockholm Syndrome Ensemble have prominent positions in Stockholm’s symphony orchestras and their own solo careers: Simon Crawford-Phillips, piano (soloist, chamber musician, conductor); Malin Broman, violin/viola (concertmaster of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra); Malin William-Olsson, violin/viola (alternate section leader in the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra); Johannes Rostamo, cello (solo cellist in the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra); and Rick Stotijn, double bass (section leader in the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra).
