Mikael Sjögren

Co-Principal/alternate solo cellist and member of the orchestra since 1990.

Mikael Sjögren has been a member of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra since 1984 and the orchestra’s alternate solo cellist since 1990. He previously served as solo cellist in the Camerata Nordica.

On multiple occasions he has performed as the soloist with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra in works by Gösta Nystroem, Joseph Haydn, Darius Milhaud and more.

Mikael Sjögren studied at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm with Ola Karlsson and Elemér Lavotha, and obtained a soloist diploma in 1985. He also studied under William Pleeth in London. In recent years, he has supplemented his studies with a teaching degree and teaches methodology at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm.

In addition to his work with the orchestra, Mikael Sjögren is active as a chamber musician and regularly performs in Konserthuset’s chamber music subscriptions. For over twenty years, he was a cellist in the Lysell Quartet, which performed regularly at Konserthuset, including all of Beethoven’s string quartets. The Lysell Quartet’s discography includes music by Hilding Rosenberg, Joseph Martin Kraus, Dag Wirén, Moses Pergament and Jan Carlstedt.
