Bruckner Symphony No. 8

Bruckner’s Eighth Symphony is dazzling, unadulterated musical splendour. This powerful symphony is performed here by the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Conductor Laureate Alan Gilbert.

Alan Gilbert was Chief Conductor of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra from 2000–2008. He completed a number of highly regarded tours and concerts at Proms and Carnegie Hall, and helped to propel the orchestra’s position in the international arena.

As Chief Conductor Designate for the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, Hamburg, Gilbert will start his tenure with the NDR orchestra in September 2019. The new appointment follows his eight-year tenure as Music Director of the New York Philharmonic.

One of the major symphonic composers to which Gilbert often returns is Anton Bruckner. In this grandiose yet tasteful music, the entire capacity of the orchestra is put to use. The Eighth Symphony became Bruckner’s last complete symphony and is a summation of all of his compositional achievements. After completing the work on the magnificent finale, Bruckner said: “This is the most significant orchestral movement I have composed in my entire life.”
