A Tribute to Jan Johansson

Pianist Jan Lundgren has titled his personal tribute to one of Sweden’s most beloved jazz musicians, Jan Johansson, "Lycklig resa" (Happy Journey). The concert features many of the infinitely beautiful interpretations of Swedish folk music, which has become a part of the soul of the Swedish people.

Jazz in Swedish from 1964 is the most-sold jazz record in Sweden ever, and a milestone in Swedish music. Jan Johansson’s jazz version of Swedish and other folk music became one of his signatures.

At this concert with pianist Jan Lundgren, Jan Johansson’s classical versions of both Swedish and Hungarian folk music are rejuvenated. Indeed, the idea is not to imitate Johansson as a model, but to pay tribute while adding new dimensions, both through Lundgren’s carefully refined piano playing and through the Bonfiglioli Weber String Quartet’s classical traits (string arrangements by Martin Berggren).

Jan Johansson regularly worked with bassist and composer Georg Riedel and here, Mattias Svensson has shouldered the central role with his double bass.
