At the age of nineteen, Amanda Maier graduated with honours in 1872 to become Sweden’s first female music director. Her drive and capability carried her on to Leipzig, the nineteenth-century meeting place for musicians and composers, where she continued her studies. She married composer Julius Röntgen and moved to Amsterdam, where the couple’s musical salons attracted celebrities such as Nina and Edvard Grieg, Anton Rubinstein, Joseph Joachim, Clara Schumann and Johannes Brahms.
Amanda Maier-Röntgen was the soloist at the premiere performance of the Violin Concerto on 10 December 1875 in Halle. The success was immediate and led to a host of follow-up concerts, including at the prestigious Gewandhaus in Leipzig.
Under the auspices of Swedish Musical Heritage, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra cellist Klas Gagge has created a new, source-critical rendition of the piece based on the composer’s manuscript and notes, which is used at this concert.
