Czeck composer Antonín Dvorák wrote the Serenade in d minor in 1878, and the piece was premiered the same year in Prague – with the composer leading the ensemble. The music reminds of the Mozart serenades composed some 100 years earlier, but there are also ingredients like the fast czeck dance type ”furiant”, which of course tells us about a different cultural background. This is beautiful and melodic music, and no less than a masterpiece its genre.
French Louise Farrenc was a very gifted composer, leading concert pianist and a professor at the conservatory in Paris. But it not until recent years that her music has found a place in the repertoire. In her work list we find piano music, chamber music, orchestral ouvertures and symphonies. With this nonet for strings and wind she reached stardom in Paris, a city otherwise mostly into opera. Also in this case we encounter music in the Mozartian vein, but at the same time originally scored. This is music with lots of playfulness.
The Nonet is led by violinist Andrej Power, who serves as the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra’s principal concertmaster since 2014. Power has appeared as a soloist with many orchestras in Sweden and elsewhere in Europe and in the US and China. In 2018 he played the Beethoven Violin Concerto with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra and chief conductor Sakari Oramo.
