Big Band Flute

Magnus Lindgren takes us through the jazz history of the flute and simultaneously nods to the future with Blue House Jazz Orchestra – and special guest Hubert Laws!

Saxophone, clarinet and flute – these are the main instruments of the phenomenally versatile Magnus Lindgren. Big Band Flute features the flute, an instrument that is no longer very common in today’s jazz. But a glance to the past reveals flute legends such as Herbie Mann, Jeremy Steig and our own Björn J:son Lindh. That list includes, of course, tonight's guest Hubert Laws!

Internationally renowned American flutist Hubert Laws is one of the few classical artists who has also mastered jazz, pop, and rhythm-and-blues genres; moving effortlessly from one repertory to another. He has appeared as a soloist with the foremost symphony orchestras in the world and collaborated with top artists in many musical fields.

Magnus Lindgren recently released the album Stockholm Underground, his tenth record since debuting in 1999, and his first purely flute release. He has been inspired by Herbie Mann’s 1969 classic, Memphis Underground.

In the first segment, Big Band Flute will begin from traditional jazz flute, as could be heard with Count Basie, for example. The funkier second half of the concert will be based on the new album, Stockholm Underground. Welcome to Big Band Flute, with Magnus Lindgren, Blue House Jazz Orchestra and numerous prominent guest artists.
