Genre: Chamber music

Norrbotten NEO

Norrbotten NEO performs a new piece by Canadian composer Justin Christensen and the recently awarded Air-Spiral-Light by Swedish Benjamin Staern.

When it comes to the performance of newly written music, Norrbotten NEO has a unique place in the Swedish music scene. Since 2013, the ensemble has been associated with Stockholm Concert Hall. Norrbotten NEO has a continuous partnership with both young and well-established composers, but they do not limit themselves to recently composed music only; the ensemble has also performed modern classics and even crossed genres to much acclaim.

In this concert, Norrbotten NEO is joined by conductor Christian Karlsen and guitarist Jacob Kellermann for a poetic program consisting of music by Swedish composer Benjamin Staern, Icelandic Anna Thorvaldsdottir, Danish Hans Abrahamsen and Canadian Justin Christensen – who has written a new piece for the ensemble.

Norrbotten NEO consists of seven full-time musicians and has its headquarters in Studio Acusticum in Piteå. The ensemble was formed in 2007 and is part of Norrbottensmusiken, but also has national assignments supported by the Swedish Arts Council, Norrbotten County Council and the municipalities in Luleå and Piteå.

Since its inception, NEO has participated in festivals such as Stockholm New Music, Nordic Music Days, Sound of Stockholm and Nordlys. Norrbotten NEO also functions as an ensemble in productions by the Piteå Chamber Opera and the musicians are section leaders of the Norrbotten Chamber Orchestra.
