Orfeus Barockensemble

The Orpheus Baroque Ensemble was formed in 2015 and consists of musicians from the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra. The ensemble is an expression of many orchestra members’ fascination with baroque music and interpretation, and several of the musicians are also active in other ensembles specialising in baroque music in addition to their work with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra.

The ensemble plays period instruments under the artistic leadership of Elin Gabrielsson, first violinist and member of the Europa Galante baroque ensemble. Each concert is led by a guest expert musician in early music – in this case, the unparalleled and multi-award-winning Swedish recorder player Dan Laurin, who in addition to his work with early music has also given the premiere performances of several newly composed pieces.

Together with the Orpheus Baroque Ensemble, Dan Laurin pays tribute to the great German baroque master Georg Philipp Telemann (1681–1757), for whom the recorder was a primary instrument. Among other things, the concert offers Telemann’s mighty Water Music, the brilliant Recorder Concerto in F Major and the magnificent Suite in A Minor for recorder and orchestra. We also hear some exciting music by the Swedish master Johan Helmich Roman (1694–1758). The Golovin Music (named after the commissioner, Russian count Golovin) has probably not been heard in Stockholm since the late 18th century!
