Organ matinée with Tomas Willstedt
A richly varied programme with unusual arrangements.
In Konserthuset’s popular organ matinée subscription, audiences get to hear Sweden’s leading organists play the building’s own organ – one of the largest instruments in Europe!
At this season’s final organ matinée, Tomas Willstedt will be playing Konserthuset’s magnificent organ. Tomas was previously the Lund Cathedral organist, and he is also a teacher and a composer. He has received particular acclaim for his improvisations and in 1992 he won the International Organ Improvisation Competition in Haarlem, in the Netherlands. He was subsequently invited to perform concerts worldwide, and he has also written about the art of improvisation.
The programme he will present includes an abundance of twentieth-century music. FrenchGermaine Tailleferre was the sole female member of the legendary group Les Six, and Tomas will play her Passacaglia in his own arrangement. In the 1920s, American George Antheil composed music intended to be played in a Dadaist film, but the music was twice as long as the movie and was thus turned into a concert instead. The music was originally composed for player pianos, xylophones, airplane propellers and electric bells, and from this, Tomas has arranged the movement Ritmo risoluto.
We will also hear a sinfonia from J.S. Bach’s Cantata No. 146, a trio for organ by Telemann in Bach’s arrangement, and Wood Piece by artist Yoko Ono.
Konserthuset Play!
French Germaine Tailleferre was the sole female composer among Les Six, a loosely formed group of six composers active in France in the 1920s. Her music is exuberantly energetic and imbued with melodic imagination. Listen
