Sibelius' Symphony No. 5
Guest performance by the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra.
Finnish conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali took over the position of chief conductor of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra in 2017. And he is not unfamiliar to Stockholm’s audiences: on several occasions he has taken the stage at Konserthuset Stockholm and conducted the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra.
Now we will hear Rouvali and the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra in Sibelius’ Symphony No. 5, one of his most performed and most popular. The idea for the famous theme heard in the magnificent final movement came to Sibelius after he saw sixteen swans. “One of my life’s great experiences! My God, what beauty.”
Santtu-Matias Rouvali and the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra also present Swedish Daniel Nelson’s Steampunk Blizzard and an exciting percussion concerto by acclaimed Finnish composer Kalevi Aho.

Sibelius himself directed the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra at the world premiere in 1924 of Symphony No. 7 at Konserthuset Stockholm. In this concert video, we will hear Sibelius’ fellow countryman and Chief Conductor of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, Sakari Oramo, in a magnificent interpretation of this epic piece.
