The Norrköpings Symphony Orchestra with its new chief conductor, German Karl-Heinz Steffens. He began his tenure this season. Before his succesful conducting career, he was the solo clarinettist of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra – an orchestra he has since then also conducted. Steffens is at the same time the newly appointed chief conductor of the State Opera in Prague.

”If the audience smiles and laughs openly when they hear my music, it gives me much joy”, Shostakovich said. And that suits no other piece better than this concerto for piano, trumpet and strings from 1933, one of his most beloved. This is music that seems to want to challenge stiffness and conservatism with its bold play with different styles, expressions and can-can dancing. The soloists are Russian-American pianist Kirill Gerstein – who returns to Konserthuset already on October 14th – and Swedish trumpet player Filip Draglund.

Beethoven’s third symphony, Eroica, was initially dedicated to Napoleon. The very first powerful chord of Eroica says to us: here awaits a grand work of valour, a heroic symphony. The story of Beethoven eliminating the title sheet to the Eroica score, on which the original dedication to Napoleon would have been, is well-known but also has many variations. Beethoven was a friend of France and his antipathy for Napoleon lessened with time.
