There is a reason why Beethoven is united with Amy Beach at this concert. Both have an interest in English, Irish and Scottish melodies. The second movement of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 4, for example, has a distinctly Gaelic theme followed by variations. Beach’s symphony, due to its characteristics, is called the Gaelic Symphony.

“A pure and beautiful flower that preserves the scent of the brightest days,” wrote Nobel Prize Winner Romain Rolland of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 4. Robert Schumann described it as a slender Greek maiden between two Nordic giants. It is a symphony in which Beethoven presents his bright and life-affirming side.

Amy Beach (1867–1944) was acclaimed in her lifetime, and she was the first female American composer to compose larger pieces. One of her major sources of inspiration was Antonin Dvorák, but as we can hear in her Gaelic Symphony, the symphonic tradition from Beethoven thrives within her music.

Konserthuset Stockholm’s major Beethoven Festival will feature a guest appearance at this concert by the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Portuguese conductor Joana Carneiro.
