Through Konserthuset’s popular organ matinée subscription, audiences get to hear Sweden’s leading organists perform on the venue’s own organ, which with its 6,100 pipes is one of the largest in Europe.

Performing at today’s organ concert, we will hear the 2018 winner of the Swedish organ association’s national competition for young organists, Oscar Rutberg from Boden. After studying music in Piteå, he moved to Stockholm where he earned his bachelor’s degree at the Royal College of Music; he is now in a master’s programme. Oscar Rutberg will present a varied programme of French, German, Belgian and Swiss organ music.

French organ virtuoso and composer Jeanne Demessieux worked as an organist in Sainte Madeleine in Paris. Her Six études is from 1944. Forty years earlier, Max Reger composed his Symphonic Fantasia and Fugue, based on Dante’s Inferno. This incredibly dense piece is filled with harmonic instability. The following year, he wrote the twelve solo pieces from which Fugue in D Major comes.

Joseph Jongen was a Belgian composer and organist who was inspired by Italy and Germany, where he studied, as well as by French music. Guy Bovet, born in 1942, is a Swiss organist and composer who also frequently writes on the subject of the history of the organ. His expertise in historical instruments has made him a coveted consultant when renovating old organs. His Toccata is from 1993.
