Bernd Richard Deutsch is an Austrian composer, born in 1977. His style is marked by inventiveness, virtuosity, playfulness and a touch of irony. He has mentioned that the inspiration may come from art, literature or just everyday life. The piece Mad Dog (2011) was partly inspired by the fururist Giacomo Balla’s painting Dynamism of a Dog on a Leash of 1912 – marked by its sense of dizzy movement. 

Franz Schubert’s second symphony has not been performed by the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra in over 30 years. Although not at the level of Beethoven’s output in the symphonic genre, it is still an impressive four-movement piece by a mere 17/18 year old Schubert; from the slow and sunny introduction to the energetic, lively and rhythmic finale.

Johannes Brahm’s composed Academic Festival Ouverture after having been named honorary doctor at the university of Breslau (today’s Wroclaw in Poland). The music i based on a series of songs associated with academic life at the time. Emphasis is on the ”festival” rather than the ”academic” in this piece – and Brahms himself didn’t have an academic background. Academic Festival Ouverture is one of the most played works by Brahms.
