Warmth, sorrow and excitement – music by Maddalena Sirmen, Shostakovich, Schubert and Schumann.
A successful international career as a professional musician and composer was essentially impossible for a woman in the eighteenth century. However, one person who managed to do it was the Italian violinist, composer and singer Maddalena Sirmen. She was born into poverty in Venice in 1745, but her life ended as a woman of wealth, with a marvellous career behind her.
Her six string quartets were published in 1769; the Minetti Quartet will perform the second at this concert. The ensemble, whose name is from a play by dramatist Thomas Bernhard, participated in Rising Stars in 2008–2009 and since then they have regularly performed at the major concert halls in Vienna, Berlin, Cologne, Barcelona, London and Stockholm.
Schubert was very keen to compose string quartets, but they did not turn out quite as he had intended. He felt the weight of Beethoven’s heavy shadow and for a period of time, Schubert did not complete anything he started, except for one quartet movement in C minor. On the other hand, when Schumann composed his String Quartet in A Major in 1842, he took positive inspiration from Beethoven’s string quartets, which he had studied intensively. The quartets of both Schubert and Schumann are on the programme this evening.
Minetti Quartet will also perform Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 7 from 1960, dedicated to the memory of his first wife, Nina.
