Soup Concert with viola and piano

Music by Johannes Brahms and Rebecca Clarke.

Towards the end of his life, Brahms felt that he was done with composition. But when he heard clarinettist Richard Mühlfeld, he changed his mind and composed the famous Clarinet Quintet and two sonatas for clarinet and piano. Even he realised he had written masterpieces, and we hear one of the sonatas here in a version for viola.

English composer and alto violinist Rebecca Clarke was one of the UK’s first professional female orchestral musicians. Her composition instructor urged her to switch from violin to viola, because then she would be at the “centre of the orchestra’s sound.” Viola became foundational to Rebecca Clarke’s work as both a composer and as a musician, and we hear her warm, mellow and melodic Morpheus, as well as an untitled piece.

French-born violist Lauriane Dahlkvist, member of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra since 2016, performs with Stefan Lindgren, the orchestra’s pianist since 2007, who is also a composer.
