He debuted with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra at a summer concert in 2022 and was promptly invited to return.
Debussy’s sensual depiction of the awakening of a faun is inscribed for eternity in music history. This music is inspired by a poem by Mallarmé, and a similarly mystical, dreamy mood unfurls in Henri Dutilleux’ masterful Cello Concerto from 1970, inspired by a poem by Baudelaire. The title refers to a distant, lost world: Tout un monde lointain. Multi-award winning French cellist Victor Julien-Laferrière debuts with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra.
Swedish Valborg Aulin (1860−1928) studied in Paris, and in four movements – or scenes – depicts atmospheres and events in the French capital. Tableaux Parisiens was her sole orchestral work, but it was never performed in her lifetime.
Bolero is Ravel’s best-known work; it was originally music for ballet but is more often performed as a concert piece. Bolero is a Spanish dance in triple metre. The music consists of a recurring melody and has the same rhythm throughout – but what incredible orchestration, and what a structure! Bolero was an immediate success – much to the composer’s surprise.

Prague-born Erwin Schulhoff was an exciting name in the European art and music scene in the early decades of the twentieth century. Dvorák encouraged him to start studying music, and he was inspired early on by jazz and Dadaism. Don’t miss this opportunity to hear Schulhoff’s racing String Quartet No. 1.
Germaine Tailleferre was a member of Les Six, a loosely formed group of six composers in France in the 1920s who reacted against Impressionist and late-Romantic music. Her work is often light and playful, and filled with imaginative melodies.
Three divertimenti composed by Benjamin Britten at age 23. This charming and energetic music was included in a quintet and depicted a few of his classmates.

Since 1999, their home base has been the modern concert hall L’Auditori in Barcelona. With this guest performance, the orchestra makes their long-awaited debut at Konserthuset Stockholm, led by their French chief conductor Ludovic Morlot.
This programme is characterised by French and Spanish elements, and in the case of Maurice Ravel – both: he was deeply interested in Spanish culture, and his mother had Basque origins and grew up in Madrid. We hear three works by Ravel, including Shéhérazade for soprano and orchestra, with Singaporean-British Fleur Barron singing the solo part. “Charismatic star” and “knockout performer” are quotes from the American and British press that pique curiosity. We also hear her in music by Xavier Montsalvatge – a trendsetting twentieth-century composer who lived in Barcelona. The song cycle Canciones Negras unites Catalan folklore and West Indian elements.
The concert begins with music by Raquel García-Tomás, born in 1984 in Barcelona. She composes modern interdisciplinary works, with elements of electronics and other artforms. Some of her pieces engage in dialogue with older masters. This brand new work reflects her admiration for the aesthetics of French music, such as Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé which concludes this concert.

Music and collections that we find here – for instance the Düben Collection in Uppsala, Sweden, and similar traces in Turku, Finland, and Tallinn, Estonia – testify about a rich and great musical exchance between cities around the Baltic Sea, already at this time in history.
Orpheus Baroque welcomes Finnish Baroque soprano Kajsa Dahlbäck, an internationally renowned soloist specialised in older and modern music. She studied under Emma Kirkby, a legendary name of the early vocal music movement, and she is a founder of the Vasa Baroque festival in Ostrobothnia, Finland.
Critically acclaimed ensemble Orpheus Baroque regularly works with prominent guests from the international Baroque music scene. Artistic director is the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic’s solo cellist, Johannes Rostamo, as well as concertmaster and Baroque violinist Elin Gabrielsson, a member, among other ensembles, of Italian Europa Galante.

She is also a dedicated interpreter of her home region’s vast trove of musical gems. Without ever misrepresenting the originals, she performs hymns and songs, accompanied by western and eastern instruments, making the works accessible to people all over the world. In addition to traditional Kurdish songs, at this concert we also hear arias from operas by Gounod, Mozart, Bellini, Verdi and Puccini.
Pervin Chakar studied at the conservatory in Perugia, Italy, and has won numerous prestigious awards, including the Maria Caniglia Competition in Sulmona and the Magda Olivero Award in Milan. She has also performed at venues such as Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Theatre an der Wien, Teatro La Fenice in Venice, and many more.

The RSPO Orchestra Academy aims to give participating musicians heightened knowledge and understanding of the profession. The young musicians receive individual tuition on their instrument by tutors that are predominantly leaders and principals of the orchestra.
In addition, extensive chamber music playing is a vital part of the course. In anticipation of this year's Composer Weekend, we are treated to three works by festival composer Lisa Streich.
Enuma Elish for brass orchestra was composed for the brass festival Signal in Gävle, where the task was to reflect on the music of medieval composer Hildegard of Bingen. The second piece, Nebensonnen for clarinet and string trio, was written for composer Helmut Lachenmann’s 80th birthday celebration and depicts sunlight on a cold winter day. In Maria Callas for ensemble, the starting point was Henry Purcell's Here the Deities Approve, while the title, of course, refers to the legendary soprano.
We will also hear Czech composer Pavel Fischer's String Quartet No. 3 ”Mad Piper” from 2011, music inspired by Canadian bagpiper Bill Millin, who became known for playing during the battles of the D-Day landings in Normandy in 1944.

The music is sometimes reminiscent of the aural worlds of nature or the city, and the composition emerges as a “sound conductor”. She sees this as sculpting with an orchestra or ensemble, and a sort of choreography emerges from the sound, inviting not only listeners, but viewers as well. She has gained more and more international attention.
In Segel (Sail), the music surges forth, whispering and breathing, occasionally whipping about – are these lines hitting a mast? In Flügel (Wings), Streich imagined the orchestra as a being with bodies in the middle and wings at the sides. How does she make it float and fly? Ishjärta (Ice Heart) paints a picture of the blood-filled warmth of a heart on one side, and its insulation within a shroud on the other.
The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra is led by Israeli conductor Ilan Volkov and the festival opening also features a world premiere: a newly composed trumpet concerto with Italian-Hungarian Lucas Lipari-Mayer performing the solo part. Among others, he studied under Håkan Hardenberger and has been a member of French contemporary music specialists Ensemble Intercontemporain since 2018.
“I feel that music has the ability to capture the truth. And I can experience the truth with Gustav Mahler,” says Lisa Streich who also included Blumine by Mahler – this beautiful andante movement is from the final version of his Symphony No. 1. “Music is the only thing that allows me to feel the truth of another human being,” says Streich.
