Once again, we welcome the superb Belcea Quartet to Konserthuset Stockholm. The quartet formed in London in 1994 and now performs on the world’s preeminent stages. The Belcea Quartet recently celebrated 20 years, for which reason they performed no fewer than three concerts during the 2014/15 season at Konserthuset.
A dark sense of tragic foreboding lies at the heart of today's programme. In their final quartets both Schubert and Shostakovich came face to face with their approaching death and, as a result, their music grapples with life’s final questions. Their individual responses are dramatically different. Schubert’s answer is a titanic struggle with fate. By contrast, what Shostakovich arrives at is a state of resigned acceptance.
