Elgar Cockaigne

Edward Elgar’s vivid and colourful concert overture Cockaigne is a portrait of London in the early twentieth century. The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra plays under the leadership of their Chief Conductor and Artistic Advisor Sakari Oramo.

In the winter of 1900/1901, Edward Elgar began to sketch material intended to be his first symphony, but which he instead turned into shorter pieces, including the first Pomp and Circumstance marches and the Cockaigne concert overture (In London Town). The overture is an easy-going and vividly drawn portrait of turn-of-the-century London.

We also hear timbral traces of Richard Wagner sweep across Elgar’s musical portrait of London, which is also compared to the overture to the Master Singers. Elgar’s Cockaigne alternates between majestic and poetic, performed here by the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra under the leadership of their Chief Conductor and Artistic Advisor Sakari Oramo.
