***

Spanish string quartet Cuarteto Casals will perform all of Beethoven’s string quartets in 2020 – the big Beethoven year. The 16 quartets came in three phases throughout his lifetime – and each phase comprised a dizzying stride forward for the art of the quartet. The acclaimed Cuarteto Casals debuted at Konserthuset in 2007 and have returned several times, most recently in 2016.

Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 1 is humorous, moving and lively, but also sad, as in the elevated lament in the second movement.

The Quartet in F Major is Beethoven’s own transcription and reworking of the Piano Sonata in E Major, Opus 14, No. 1. It is music with strong contrasts, bold harmonics and sudden shifts between powerful and weak.

The basic mood of the second Razumovsky Quartet in E Minor is tragic and wailing. But it still finds its resolution in the rhythmic finale, a rustic and melodic dance composed by Beethoven in one of his best moods. In between, we hear the second movement with its powerful accents and the slow third movement which, according to pianist and teacher Carl Czerny, a student of Beethoven’s, was inspired by the starry sky of a clear night.
