With his fragile, nearly aphoristic pieces, Anton Webern took twelve-tone music to its outer limits. His early music is romantic, with traits of Johannes Brahms which we hear in the beautiful “Slow movement” for string quartet.

Sven-David Sandström’s music is also characterised by extremes, from the revolutionary requiem De ur alla minnen fallna (“Requiem dedicated to those fallen from memory”) to romantic and classically tinged chamber music, as here in his fourth string quartet, Seven Pieces.

American Gabriella Smith (b. 19 91) found the title for her piece Carrot Revolution in a novel by Emile Zola, in which friend and painter Cezanne says, “The day will come when a freshly observed carrot will start a revolution.” Smith has reinterpreted the quotation into rhythmically elegant music that transitions between pop-inspired melodies, captivating minimalism and dramatic chords.

Shostakovich’s Piano Quintet was composed against a dark setting – 1940, a year of war – and in this music, which is rich with contrasts and surprising whimsy, he paints tragicomic scenes, musical glances backwards and hopeful gestures. It is also one of his best known and most popular chamber music pieces.

In addition to the four philharmonic musicians Daniela Bonfiglioli and Sofie Sunnerstam, violin; Vicki Powell, viola; and Hanna Dahlkvist, cello, Terés Löf will participate on piano. She debuted with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra in 2001 in Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 1 and since then she has been a recurring guest soloist at Konserthuset Stockholm.
