Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel composed symphonic works and a great deal of exquisite chamber music. She was the older sister of Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy. There were also two other skilled musicians in the family: their siblings Rebecka, a singer, and Paul, a cellist. For Paul, Fanny composed the lyrically alluring and vivid Fantasia for cello and piano.

Like Fanny Mendelssohn, Emilie Mayer was a great admirer of Beethoven. She was also an original composer and as we hear in this Sonata, over time she was drawn more and more to the prevalent romantic style, in the spirit of Schumann and Brahms.

In between works by these two nineteenth century composers, we will hear music by the exceptionally gifted Lili Boulanger, who died of Crohn’s disease in 1918 at just 24 years old. In her Nocturne, the melody section sings sorrowfully to the trickling piano notes in broken chords. In 2015, Konserthuset Stockholm dedicated its annual Composer Festival to Lili Boulanger and her older sister Nadia Boulanger.
