For the very first time, Konserthuset Stockholm welcomes the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra and National Orchestra of Catalonia (Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona i Nacional de Catalunya). The orchestra has an extensive history and has worked under several different names since 1944. In conjunction with the opening of L’Auditori in Barcelona in 1999, it became the institution’s resident orchestra. Japanese Kazushi Ono is chief conductor.

This guest performance begins with music by Spanish composer Robert Gerhard (1896–1970). We hear selections from his ballet Don Quixote, based on the famous Cervantes novel of the same name; the music was composed in the 1940s.

The young Spanish cellist Pablo Ferrández was born into a musical family in Madrid in 1991. After studying at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofia, he continued his studies under Frans Helmerson and has also been a student at the Anne-Sophie Mutter Foundation. Ferrández was a prize-winner at the 2015 Tchaikovsky Competition. At this concert, he is the soloist in Camille Saint-Saëns’ popular and passionate Cello Concerto No. 1. The concert concludes with the orchestral fireworks of Hector Berlioz’ Symphonie Fantastique.

The orchestra is led by Spanish conductor Juanjo Mena. He began his career with the Bilbao Symphony Orchestra and subsequently held positions with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and the BBC Philharmonic. He is currently principal conductor of the Cincinnati May Festival, one of the most prestigious choral festivals in North America. He performed with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra in October 2013.
