Brahms Symphony No. 2
A Swedish depiction of the sea and a symphony that ripples.
In his second symphony, Brahms paints captivatingly beautiful scenes from nature. The melodies of this bright music have been compared to trickling streams in the picture-perfect village in Austria where Brahms was staying when he composed this symphony.
Nature is also apparent in Helena Munktell’s Bränningar (Breaking Waves), which begins the concert. This dreamy, colourful music conveys a powerful intensity and frothy orchestral movements. Composed in the 1890s, this is also one of the very first depictions of the ocean in Swedish music.
Tobias Ringborg conducts, and has led the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra on numerous occasions before. He often spotlights both older and newer works from the Swedish repertoire.
