Shahram Nazeri is one of the leading classical Persian singers. He has appeared at major festivals and venues in Europe and the US, and above all in the Middle East, where he has broken audience records. One of his concerts drew an audience of fully 140,000 people in the year 2000.

Shahram Nazeri was born in 1950 to a Kurdish family in Kermanshah, western Iran. His interest in singing was sparked at a young age thanks to his mother’s devoted support and inspiration. He studied under some of Iran’s foremost singing teachers and appeared on TV for the first time at the age of 11.

Early on, Shahram Nazeri became interested in the 13th-century Sufi poet Jalal ad-Din Rumi, Iran’s most beloved and cherished poet. In the 1980s, Nazeri became one of the first people to merge the poetry of Rumi with classical Persian music. This paved the way for Nazeri’s popularity far beyond the borders of Iran.

Shahram Nazeri sings in both Persian and Kurdish and has released around 40 albums. The top-seller, “Gol’eh Sad Barg” (“The One-Hundred-Petalled Rose”) from 1984, is believed to hold the album sales record in classical Persian music.

In Western media, Shahram Nazeri is referred to as the “Pavarotti of Iran” and the “Persian Nightingale” so that Western audiences might understand the greatness of this master’s powerful and colourful voice.
