Susana Baca

Afro-Peruvian music from a three-time Latin Grammy winner.

Susana Baca is one of Peru’s brightest shining stars. With poetic songs, magical stage presence and an unparalleled voice, Susana Baca is not only an exceptional musician, but also an ambassador for Peruvian music.

With an excellent feel for music, she sings songs with elements of styles such as cumbia, son, plena and son-jarocho. The harmonies and melodies often come from traditional Peruvian music, but she also derives plenty of inspiration from Cuban and Brazilian music.

Susana Baca calls her music Afro-Peruvian and in 1995 her version of the song Maria Lando was released on the Luaka Bop album Afro-Peruvian Classics: The Soul of Black Peru. The album, and her friendship with Talking Heads singer David Byrne, paved the way for Susana Baca’s international career.
