Sebastian Hilli Miracle

Ryan Bancroft conducts deeply emotional music composed during the 2020 pandemic.

Finnish composer Sebastian Hilli wrote Miracle in the spring of 2020, as the pandemic was spreading across the world. During the first days of work on the piece, he also suffered a personal loss when a family member fell ill and died shortly afterwards. Grief, longing and shock permeate the work, but equally important is love as a life-giving force.

Hilli has described a journey through different emotional states: from a sense that something is about to happen, through collapse and melancholy towards euphoria and a search for peace. Towards the end, a chorale emerges in the winds, representing for the composer our ties to the past and the memories that live on.

Miracle was premiered in Helsinki during the pandemic in a version for reduced ensemble. In this film, we hear the first performance of the work in its original version.
