Konserthuset 100 Years

On 7 April 1926, Konserthuset Stockholm was inaugurated. One hundred years later, its activities are more vibrant than ever, and the time has come to look both back and ahead.

During the birthday week itself, from 7 to 11 April, the building was filled with live music, guided tours, exhibitions, a book presentation and dance.

But it does not end there – in fact, the celebrations continue throughout the summer and across the entire next concert season. Konserthuset turns 100 this year, and in 2027 the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra celebrates its 125th anniversary. Ahead lies the 2026/27 concert season, which we have named the Anniversary Season – a season celebrating these two milestones.

Here, we have gathered texts and information about the history of the building – there is surely something new to discover even for those who have visited Konserthuset many times before.

Preparations are now well underway for this summer’s major anniversary exhibition, which tells the story of Konserthuset’s first century – from its inauguration in 1926 to today’s international concert hall.

An architectural competition for a concert hall was announced in 1919. Ivar Tengbom won with his proposal The Red Heart.

The Main Hall is a meeting place – a public square within Konserthuset.

From the outset, Konserthuset was intended to serve as the venue for the Nobel Prize Award Ceremony – and it has done so since 1926.

A symbol of an era. Quality, craftsmanship and playfulness characterise the hundred-year-old landmark at Hötorget.

Orpheus was finally installed in 1936 – only to vanish one night in 1938.

Ivar Tengbom won the architectural competition for Stockholm’s long-awaited concert hall.

Tens of thousands of photographs and many years of documentation lie behind the beautiful volume published to coincide with the anniversary.

At the Konserthuset box office, you can purchase more than just concert tickets.

The exterior of Konserthuset is undergoing an extensive renovation. The work is scheduled for completion on 30 June.

Hötorget is being transformed in the spring of 2026, becoming an even more attractive square and meeting place.
