Boris Godunov

Guest Performance from Gothenburg

The Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and Göteborg Opera Choir and soloists guest-perform a piece that is unlikely to pass anyone by: the masterpiece opera Boris Godunov performed in concert. Here, Mussorgsky tells with sharp insight about the tzar that ruled Russia in the early seventeenth century. He also presents the Russian people in luminous crowd scenes, proudly patriotic, but oppressed by the hands of power.

Kent Nagano leads the troops. He is the orchestra’s principal guest conductor and artistic advisor. Since 2006, Kent Nagano has also been chief conductor of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra and in autumn 2015, he was selected as music director of the Hamburg State Opera and Philharmoniker Hamburg. The Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra has toured worldwide and regularly collaborates with conductors such as Joana Carneiro, Esa-Pekka Salonen and Gustavo Dudamel.

Soloists heard in Boris Godunov include the Ukrainian bass Alexander Tsymbalyuk, who has had spectacular performances on stages such as La Scala, Covent Garden, Berlin State Opera and the Metropolitan.
