Janne Thomsen
Monday at Last
String trio ZilliacusPerssonRaitinen with Danish flute player Janne Thomsen.
It’s Monday at last, and the string trio ZilliacusPerssonRaitinen continues to invite guest musicians to explore new and old music with them. This time, the spotlight will shine on acclaimed Danish flute player Janne Thomsen. She began her studies in Denmark and continued in London at the Royal Academy of Music and the Paris Conservatoire.
In addition to solo engagements with numerous orchestras, Thomsen has also worked closely with many composers and instrumentalists, including Maxim Vengerov, Gidon Kremer, Janine Jansen, Pierre-Laurent Aimard, Yuri Bashmet, Joshua Bell and Steven Isserlis, as well as Sofia Gubaidulina, Wolfgang Rihm and Hans Werner Henze.
The concert will begin with a piece for flute by French composer Cécile Chaminade (1857–1944), which did not receive its deserved praise until the modern era. French-Swedish Henri Marteau (1874–1934) is best known as one of the great violinists of his time, but he was also active as a composer – especially of chamber music. Haydn’s Flute Quartet in A Major rounds out the first half, with all participants on stage.
Scottish composer Thea Musgrave (b. 1928) is still incredibly active in the music world, and has composed an enormous body of orchestral music, solo concerts, operas and chamber music. German Robert Kahn (1865–1951) left behind a more modest body of work, but it includes many incredibly beautiful pieces of chamber music. Swiss Volkmar Andreae (1879–1962) – best known as a conductor and long-time leader of the Tonhalle Orchester Zürich – composed, among other work, two operas, two symphonies, and many chamber music pieces. In Andreae’s quartet, all four musicians gather once again.
