Genre: Chamber music

Three romances and a trio

Passion and Lyrics

Romance was one of Clara Schumann’s favourite genres, and the Three Romances for Cello and Piano were among the last pieces she wrote. They were composed in the summer of 1853, a productive and joyful period in her life, and are both passionate and lyrical.

Brahms played the horn as a young man and his love for the instrument can be heard in several of his orchestral works. He wrote the Horn Trio while visiting the countryside outside of Baden-Baden. The music has an air of melancholy. Brahms’ mother died earlier that year, and the word mesto, sorrowful, is included as a direction for the slow movement.

Violinist Bo-Gustaf Thorell has played with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra since 1982, and cellist Mikael Sjögren since 1984. Markus Maskuniitty assumed the post of solo hornist in 2007 and came most recently at that time from the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin. Stefan Lindgren is The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra’s pianist.

Menu: Winter soup with brussels sprouts and ground beef, served with orange and parsley crème.
