Viennese Classics with Spinosi

The magnificent overture of the Prometheus ballet begins with a rapid chord that immediately captures listeners’ attention. The overture is followed by Mozart’s festive and bright Symphony No. 35, which was named after the family that commissioned it. The work was written shortly after Mozart transitioned to big city living in Vienna.

The spa where Beethoven composed Symphony No. 7 is said to have been a calmer environment. He realised it was one of his best works and conducted it at its premiere performance at a charity gala. One of the orchestra musicians later said Beethoven leapt into the air before a powerful section of the music.

Whether this evening’s conductor Jean-Christoph Spinosi will do the same remains to be seen, but he has been commended for his energy on the concert stage. He is also without a doubt a breath of fresh air in the music world and unconventional in the best sense. He is touring the world with his own Ensemble Matheus and has engaged in several acclaimed collaborations with mezzo soprano Cecilia Bartoli.
