Emanuel Ax

A spectacular programme dedicated entirely to Chopin!

Emanuel Ax is one of the world’s foremost pianists and regularly performs with the most prominent orchestras and conductors in the US, Europe and Asia. He is known for his uniquely vast repertoire and breadth of expression. In this recital, he performs music by Frédéric Chopin, one of the great geniuses of piano music.

Chopin was a frequent presence at salons in Paris, where he lived after fleeing Poland in 1830. He lived in exile and never returned to his home country, though he visited it regularly in his music, which is particularly evident in the mazurkas and Polish dances. We will hear his Three Mazurkas Op. 56, as well as his large-scale Polonaise Fantaisie and a few more of his best-known pieces, such as the sumptuous Barcarolle, the beautiful nocturnes of Op. 55, and Berceuse.

Finally, Emanuel Ax will perform the magnificent piano sonata. This beautiful, virtuosic, dramatic and otherworldly music demands exquisite skill from the pianist.

Emanuel Ax’s discography is comprehensive and he has received multiple Grammy awards for his recordings, several of which are with Yo-Yo Ma. He has visited Konserthuset Stockholm several times before and has appeared with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra – including this week, with the solo in Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 17 prior to this recital.
