Three first performances by one of the foremost quartets, not shying to play new music. On a regular basis, the Stenhammar Quartet commissions new pieces from Swedish composers. Since its formation in 2002, the quartet has established itself as one of the leading string quartets of Scandinavia. The recordings have been praised internationally.

Gunnar Bucht is one of the most important Swedish composers of the late 20th century. His fifth string quartet, composed in 2017, shows both orchestral qualities and passages of great delicacy. Another significant composer of our times is Jan W. Morthenson. The modern classic Ancora, from 1983, is an exemple of his ”meta music” where he reflects upon musical styles and expressions. In this piece, folk music is absorbed and processed.

One of the latest commissions was Anna Einarsson’s Courage, mon amie: an an outcome of the darkness of the corona pandemic, as well as challenging experiences on a personal level. Jonas Valfridsson’s third string quartet is a result of the pandemic as well, and celebrates the Belarusian people’s struggle for freedom in opposition to Lukashenko’s presidency.
