The voluminous Trio in E-flat major is the jewel of Franz Schubert’s four piano trios. The theme in the second movement was inspired by a Swedish folk song, See the Sun Set, composed by Isak Albert Berg.

The resemblance between Berg’s melody and the celebrated second movement from Schubert’s piano trio is indeed quite striking, even if it is not an exact imitation. This movement from Schubert’s Trio in E-flat major has become something of a global hit. Director Stanley Kubrick used it as a key musical theme in his movie Barry Lyndon, and it has appeared in a long line of other movies and docudramas, and in vignettes on TV shows.

The trio is one of Schubert’s last bigger compositions, and despite the limited power of the ensemble, it is filled with a tangible magnificence. Schubert dated the trio November 1827 and it was first performed at a private event in January the following year – which is also the year of Schubert’s death, at just 31 years of age.

Schubert’s Piano Trio in E-flat major is performed here by Johannes Lörstad, section leader of the second violins in the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra; Marie Macleod, solo cellist; and pianist Martin Sturfält, who is particularly well-known as a distinguished interpreter of the music of Stenhammar.

Menu: Corn soup with roasted corn & chorizo. The soup is served with sourdough bread, crispbread, whipped butter, and cheese as well as drinks and coffee/tea with a small biscuit. All the soups are lactose- and gluten-free. Please let us know any dietary requirements when booking.
