Soup Concert with cello and piano

Earthy and playful music.

Philharmonic member Hanna Dahlkvist, who is also a member of the renowned Dahlkvist Quartet, frequently works with the Belarusian pianist Darya Tchaikovsky, who has lived in Stockholm for many years. Here, they perform Romantic music.

In the late 1840s, Robert Schumann composed a series of pieces that could be performed at home by amateurs in the growing German middle-class, so-called Hausmusik. This was the purpose of his “Five Pieces in Folk Style” – music that steps away from the inflated aspects of Romantic works in search of something simpler and more grounded. It is as if Schumann, who was an anxious and complicated person, wants to express another side of himself in this music.

The English-American composer Rebecca Clarke (1886–1979) was also known in her time as an alto violin virtuoso, and she was one of the first women to become a professional orchestral musician. The three-movement sonata was composed in 1919, soon after she had emigrated to the US. Originally composed for viola and piano, this playful and beautiful music borders between Romantic and Impressionistic.
