Monday at Last with early music
Special guests: Spanish early music specialists of El Gran Teatro del Mundo.
In Monday at Last, violinist Cecilia Zilliacus and cellist Kati Raitinen welcome guest performers and present both newer and older works. At this concert, we hear three members from the Spanish ensemble El Gran Teatro del Mundo, specialising in repertoires from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The name of the ensemble, the Big Theatre of Life, is taken from a seventeenth-century drama charged with mysticism.
We hear music by French masters such as Couperin, Boismortier, Marais and, not least, Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre. She was a prodigy who performed at Versailles for Louis XIV at the age of five. She grew up on the little island of Île Saint-Louis in the Seine, in the heart of Paris, and was rooted in French Baroque tradition, but was highly influenced by Italian music.
We also hear a violin sonata by Johann Sebastian Bach and stunningly beautiful music by German Johann Gottlieb Janitsch. In addition: a new piece by the ensemble’s gamba player, Bruno Hurtado Gosalvez.
