New Friday with Holmander and Huang

Surprises and humour with an internationally acclaimed duo.

The combination of Magnus Holmander and David Huang is not a short-lived example of a clarinet soloist and pianist, but rather a solid duet that tours worldwide. As part of Rising Stars, they have performed at Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Musikverein in Vienna and Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg.

We hear music by German Jörg Widmann (recently featured in Konserthuset’s International Composer Festival), Finnish Magnus LIndberg and especially three pieces by the young (born in 1992) American Molly Joyce, deemed one of the “most versatile, prolific and intriguing composers working under the vast new-music dome” by The Washington Post.

Internationally, Holmander and Huang have been described as “a world-class duo with a clear and approachable concept presenting the music with a sense of humour and the unexpected.” Holmander combines clarinet-playing with other artforms – like music and magic. For his “lightning-quick virtuosity, stage presence and depth of sound,” in 2019 Holmander received the Royal Swedish Academy of Music’s new (at that time) Blåsmusikpriset (Wind Music Prize). He was also appointed to Rising Stars that year.

Swedish-Chinese pianist David Huang is one of Sweden’s most acclaimed musicians. He won the Soloist Prize in 2014 and was Artist in Residence at Sveriges Radio P2 from 2014–16. He is also behind First Row – the concert subscription with the feel of a house party, as well as the outdoor festival Gränslandet (with conductor Christian Karlsen) – where classical music and the symphony orchestra merge with a nightclub under the Skanstull bridge in Stockholm.

New Friday is the series for anyone who is curious and interested in exploring the new music of our era. Come early, stay late – the bar will be open before and after the concert with drinks and appetizers.
