Philharmonic day – Concert featuring Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra

Music from Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker and more.

The third and final concert with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra this festive day, is a concert with the orchestra in focus. Konserthuset’s Programme Director Fredrik Andersson is your host and guides through the music.

English composer William Walton’s ”coronation march” was written for the coronation of King George VI, and performed in conjunction with this event in Westminster Abbey in 1937. But surely it also sounds a bit like film music? Like a joyful scene from Star Wars perhaps.

More English music: Alice Mary Smith was a prominent composer of the 19th century, but she has long been forgotten. Among other things, she wrote two symphonies, and we get to hear an exuberant section from the work that probably was the first English symphony composed by a woman.

The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor Simon Crawford Philips close the conscert with music from Tchaikovsky’s beloved ballet The Nutcracker, and the dancing notes that many recognise.
