Stenhammar, yesterday, today and tomorrow – anniversary concert

External organiser: Wada Music Management

Choral works, chamber music, songs, Midwinter and the second piano concerto in a unique arrangement for chamber ensemble

2021 marks 150 years since the birth of Wilhelm Stenhammar, and it is clear from the sheer number of ensembles paying tribute to him this year that his music is beloved. Stenhammar’s music will hopefully continue to be performed more and more, even after this 150th anniversary year, both in Sweden and abroad. At this concert, musicians from various countries and a contemporary composer interpret his music.

The programme includes several of Stenhammar’s best-known works as well as some less familiar pieces. In addition, Swedish composer Stefan Klaverdal has completed Stenhammar’s sketch for a cello sonata with originality. Here, Stenhammar’s idea for the cello sonata is presented to a larger audience for the first time. Jazz singer Cecilia Stenhammar, Wilhelm’s granddaughter, gives a very special guest performance. She sings the ballad of “Riddaren Finn Komfusenfej” (“The Knight Finn Komfusenfej”), which Stenhammar used as a theme in the third movement of his masterful fifth string quartet, which is also performed at this concert. In addition, several of his orchestral pieces are performed in brilliant chamber ensemble versions with two grand pianos.

The concert is arranged by Wada Music Management in collaboration with Friends of Stenhammar in Japan, with support from the Swedish Performing Arts Agency and the Swedish Arts Council.
