Fred Lindberg Diploma Concert

External organiser: The Royal College of Music

Fred Lindberg graduated in 2020 from the Royal College of Music/Edsberg, chamber music programme, after six years of study. His main teachers were Torleif Thedéen, Jakob Koranyi, Gautier Capucon and Ulrika Edström.

Over the years, Fred Lindberg has received numerous distinctions and awards, including Handelsbanken’s Jan Wallander Prize for young musicians in Sweden. The prize includes use of a cello built in 1741 by Gennaro Gagliano, which Handelsbanken generously lends to the recipient. Fred was also a semi-finalist in the Soloist Prize and has received several scholarships, such as the Järnåker Scholarship and the Frimurarordens Rektorstipendium (“Masonic Chancellor’s Scholarship”).

In the 2018/19 season, Fred Lindberg participated in the prestigious “Classe d’Excellence de Violoncelle” mentorship programme, a year-long training in Paris at the Fondation Louis Vuitton, led by world-renowned cellist Gautier Capuçon. Fred has also performed as a soloist with, among others, the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, l’Orchestre du Conservatoire de Paris, Orkestern Filialen and the Royal College of Music Symphony Orchestra. Fred Lindberg now plays professionally in various orchestras, chamber music settings and as a soloist.

At this diploma concert, we hear him in one of Bach’s famous cello suites and Rachmaninoff’s powerful Sonata in G minor, in which the piano part is also prominent. We also hear Shostakovich’s fantastic Piano Quintet from 1940 that shifts between wartime melancholy, musical circus arts, and a borrowed theme from Bach.
