Opera is dead! Long live Opera!

External organiser: Cantemus Produktion AB

Is it opera’s funeral procession opening the show… or a celebration of opera’s birth?

Opera is thought to have begun with Monteverdi’s Orfeo, which premiered 24 February 1607. That is where we begin… but on 2 June 2024. Journey through the 500-year history of opera and hear how this musical drama depicts, reveals and reflects on human behaviour in every form.

Hear the hits of opera and be captivated by the sounds of composers such as Monteverdi, Rameau, Gluck, Handel, Mozart, Rossini, Wagner, Verdi, Offenbach and Bizet. Laugh, cry and shiver with delight – this performance has space for big emotions! Would you like to experience how it feels to sing opera? Take the chance to join in: there will be opportunities to sing along in fun and surprising ways!

With this concert, the Cantemus choir celebrates its fiftieth season. We also hear Caroline Gentele, a soprano who has performed for the king and queen on visits to the city, and appeared on popular TV shows, at the Nobel Banquet, in concert halls and on opera stages – both as a soloist, and with the ensemble DivineOpera. Their motto is: “opera for everyone, everywhere”.

Baritone Helgi Reynisson recently performed at the Royal Swedish Opera and is now on the way to international opera stages.

Conductors Sofia and Göran Staxäng lead Cantemus and an orchestra headed up by concertmaster Karin Eriksson.

This is a performance for opera lovers and for listeners who don’t yet know that they love opera.
