For several decades, Adolf Wiklund was a central figure in Swedish musical life, as a pianist, composer and conductor. In the 1920s, he became a conductor of The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra (then known as the Stockholm Concert Society Orchestra). As a composer, he is remembered today primarily for his two piano concertos, which were part of the Swedish repertoire for many years and were also performed internationally.
The First Piano Concerto was composed in 1907 and revised in the 1930s. Wiklund was himself an accomplished pianist, and the concerto combines virtuosic, Romantic piano writing with a richly textured orchestral score. Lyrical warmth is balanced by powerful climaxes, in a late-Romantic musical language with a distinctly Nordic character.
Musical ideas recur and are transformed throughout the three movements. In the finale, Wiklund returns to material from the opening of the concerto, bringing the work to an exultant conclusion.
