Max Bruch’s First Violin Concerto is one of the most beloved works in the Romantic violin repertoire. Bruch worked on the concerto for many years, seeking advice from, among others, the violinist Joseph Joachim, who performed the final version in 1868.
Bruch was deeply rooted in the German Romantic tradition, with Mendelssohn-Bartholdy and Schumann among his most important influences. His particular gift for long, singing melodies permeates the concerto, in which lyrical warmth is combined with dramatic power and violinistic brilliance.
The three movements form an unusually cohesive whole. Bruch called the first Vorspiel, or Prelude, and the solo violin immediately assumes a free, almost improvisatory role. The music continues without a break into the heartfelt Adagio, before the concerto concludes with an energetic and virtuosic finale.
