Norman Symphony No. 3

Ludvig Norman’s Symphony No. 3 is full of seductive melodies and imaginative orchestral harmonies in the spirit of Schumann and Mendelssohn. The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra plays under the baton of Chief Conductor Sakari Oramo.

Ludvig Norman was one of the strongest personalities in music of his era. He studied in Leipzig, which was one of the most important music cities in the nineteenth century. Many teachers praised his talent; Robert Schumann was particularly appreciative.

Once home in 1852, he energetically immersed himself in the Swedish music scene; he was considered a radical and a strong constructor. He was appointed conductor of the Royal Swedish Opera’s orchestra, the Royal Swedish Orchestra, and conducted the premieres of Verdi’s La Traviata, Gounod’s Romeo and Juliet, and Bizet’s Carmen. He also introduced Wagner to Swedish opera audiences.

Together with Adolf Fredrik Lindblad and Franz Berwald, Ludvig Norman is one of our major symphonic composers. His third symphony, which was also his last, radiates with passion and brilliance. The third movement’s allegretto stands out with its elegant motif, drastic rhythms and energetically advancing strings.
