Orpheus' Treasure Trove

Baroque gems by French master François Couperin.

Many members of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra are fascinated by Baroque music and interpretations. The Orpheus Baroque Ensemble was formed in 2015 and plays period instruments under the artistic guidance of concertmaster Elin Gabrielsson, violinist and member of the Baroque ensemble Europa Galante.

Here, the ensemble will perform pieces by French Baroque master François Couperin, often known as le grand, or the great, in honour of the 350-year anniversary of his birth. He is also the most prominent and acclaimed member of the musical Couperin family. He was born in Paris and wove rococo elegance into his music, along with French dance rhythms and Italian-influenced melodies. He was an organist and harpsichordist, and composed large collections of chamber and piano music, including the famous Pièces de Clavecin.
