Prize-Winning cellist Amalie Stalheim

Broström’s Cello Concerto and Tchaikovsky’s Winter Dreams.

Cellist Amalie Stalheim won the Soloist Prize in 2018. The contest is held every other year by the Royal Swedish Academy of Music and is Sweden’s foremost soloist competition. The jury’s statement: “Her technical brilliance goes hand in hand with sensitivity and personal expressiveness. She conveys a musicality which we hope will gild the world’s concert halls for many years to come and inspire new generations of young musicians.”

Stalheim is also part of Crescendo, the Norwegian international mentor program for young talents in classical music; a joint venture between the Bergen International Festival, the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra and the Barratt Due Institute of Music. Among the mentors are Janine Jansen and Leif Ove Andsnes.

At this concert, we will hear Amalie Stalheim’s extraordinary talent in Tobias Broström’s rhythmically concentrated and melodically beautiful cello concerto, which has been performed many times since its world premiere in 2011.

Russian conductor Stanislav Kochanovsky and the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra also offer Russian music: Borodin’s passionate and lovingly romantic Polovtsian Dances and Tchaikovsky’s magnificent first symphony, Winter Dreams.
